AppleCare, the†wish†of every Mac user, especially for their laptops but usually way to expensive to afford.
Now in Europe Apple has to have a warranty of 2 years according to EU regulations. In their EULA it is†specifically†noted that this is one year but if you threaten them just a little bit they are more than happy to provide two years of support if you need it.
I was surfing the Apple Store Netherlands today looking for a soon-to-be-bought replacement for my existing MacBook Pro and yes it will be a MacBook Pro again.
So after doing a small price comparison with the US store I came to the following conclusions:
| US | NL | US to Eur | Additional Cost | |
| MacBook Pro 15.4 | $1999 | Ä1799 | Ä1281.57456 | Ä517 |
| Ram Upgrade to 4Gb | $200 | Ä160 | Ä128.221567 | Ä31.8 |
| HDD Upgrade to 200Gb | $50 | Ä45.01 | Ä32.0553917 | Ä12.96 |
| HDD Upgrade to 200Gb | $100 | Ä90 | Ä64.1107834 | Ä25.90 |
But you know what, screw that. I love Apple hardware and the bundled OS, it has never let me down and I don’t mind paying the extra euro’s but Ä500 for the same laptop is a bit much if you ask me.
Now the shock of the day: AppleCare: $349 AppleCare Ä449 Converted: Ä223.746634
So we, in Europe, are actually buying half of the AppleCare extended warranty part and paying double, double, double for it.
Now that, my friends, is totally ridiculous and one of the most brilliant rip-off’s I have seen in a long time.
